A donation-funded year of Servo development

Josh Bowman-Matthews’ part-time work on Servo was funded entirely by monthly donations through OpenCollective and GitHub. During the year, he reviewed 1,150 pull requests and nominated eight new maintainers.

Lowering barriers for new contributors

Bowman-Matthews filed 114 issues targeted at newer contributors, and 92% of those issues have been fixed. He also wrote documentation on borrow hazards, experimental features, Servo’s AI policy, finding tasks and fixing stable and intermittent test failures.

Work on stability and browser behavior

He made many flaky tests more stable.
He supported a large-scale rewrite of Servo’s JavaScript engine integration, which addressed intermittent panics related to garbage collection.
He uncovered broken `window.open` behavior.

Strengthening the project’s maintainer pipeline

The work combined day-to-day code review with efforts to expand Servo’s contributor base. Bowman-Matthews reviewed 1,150 pull requests, supported another contributor’s grant proposal to work on Servo—which was approved—and nominated eight new maintainers.
